  1. #1In search results

    Go on a date tonight

    • datenot in name
    What it shows
A couple's photo with a “You got a match!” card showing a 95% badge, the line “Chat and meet for free right now” and a “Start dating” button.
    Why it converts
Shows the result first: a match and a button to act on it. The line “Chat and meet for free right now” is the app's own claim and states the offer in plain words.
  2. #2In search results

    Date with local singles

    • local singlesnot in name
    What it shows
A “it's a match” screen with a portrait, the line “You and Sam liked each other!” and a message box.
    Why it converts
Names who you can meet and where, a more specific promise than a general dating line. The match screen shows the next step, sending a message.
  3. #3In search results

    Find new friends

    • friendsnot in name
    What it shows
A grid of profile cards with names, ages, green status dots, percentage badges and “Good chance” labels, under a “Chances” tab with a count of 10.
    Why it converts
Adds a second use, making friends, for people who do not want to date. The percentage badges show how matches are ranked.
  4. #4

Chat and date with a new people

    • chatin name
    What it shows
Two lists of profile photos: “Write to them now” with an Online tag and “Say hello to the guests”, each with a name, age and minutes-ago time.
    Why it converts
Shows that people are online and recent, which suggests someone will answer. The grid is dense, so the caption carries the message.
  5. #5

    Check your guests

      What it shows
Five message and like rows, each with a small photo and a blue “Answer” or yellow “Check” button.
      Why it converts
Shows what happens after you join: likes and messages arrive and need a reply. Large buttons make the action clear even at small size.

    5. 05

      Two uses in one set

Captions name dating, local singles and friends. People with different goals can each find their reason.

    Where the points are

    1. Ask happy users for a rating+16 pts

4.3 stars from 5,183 ratings. Apple's in-app rating prompt can be shown up to 3 times a year; show it right after a user finishes something in the app.

    2. Ship an update+11 pts

The last update was 141 days ago. A new version also refreshes the "What's New" notes people read before they download.

    3. Check caption terms against your subtitle and keywords

3 caption terms aren't in the app name: date, local singles, friends. Captions don't count for search; the subtitle and the 100-character keyword field do.

    Apply it to your app

A checklist for your next product page update.

    • Open with the result a user gets, such as a match, not a menu.
    • Write short captions with a clear action, like “Go on a date tonight”.
    • Circle or color one key word in the caption to guide the eye.
    • Use large dark type on a plain light background so captions read at thumbnail size.
    • Show real content on the screen, such as people or messages, so visitors see what they get.
    • Name each use case in its own caption when your app serves more than one goal.
    How it works

    How the ASO score works

    1. 01

      App name, 25 points

Up to 10 for how much of Apple's 30 characters it uses, 10 for a brand + keyword structure, 5 when keywords fill half the name or more.

    2. 02

      Screenshots, 35 points

Captions on every image, captions that name searched features, a first screenshot that shows the main use, one design system, readability at search size, and a trust signal.

    3. 03

      Ratings, 25 points

Up to 15 for the average (from 4.0, full marks at 4.8) and 10 for the count (from 1,000, full marks at 100,000 ratings).

    4. 04

      Freshness, 15 points

Full marks for an update in the last 30 days, falling to zero at 180 days. 85+ is excellent, 70+ strong, 50+ fair.

    FAQ

    Common questions

    What is an ASO score?

A 100-point check of the parts of an App Store page you control: the app name, screenshots, ratings and how recently the app was updated. It's our own scoring rule, shown in full on this page, not a number from Apple. Use it to compare your page with apps that already sell well in your category.

How long can an app name be on the App Store?

30 characters. A common pattern is a short brand followed by the main thing people search for, like “Dating and Chat - Evermatch”, which uses 27. Apple also gives you a 30-character subtitle and a 100-character keyword field for more terms.

Which screenshots show up in App Store search results?

The first one to three, when the app has no preview video. That's why the first three should cover the main reasons people download. Dating and Chat uses them for date, local singles and friends.

How many screenshots can an iPhone app have?

Up to 10 per device size. Apple recommends focusing each screenshot after the first on one main benefit or feature. Dating and Chat uses 5.

Where do the download and revenue numbers come from?

They're third-party estimates for the US App Store, not figures reported by the developer. Treat them as a sense of scale. Growth compares the latest month with the month before.

Do screenshot captions help an app rank in search?

Apple says search results use text matches in the app name, subtitle, keywords and primary category, plus user behavior such as downloads, ratings and reviews. Captions aren't on that list: they help people who already see the app decide to download. When a caption names something people search for, put that term in the keyword field too.
