Screenshots and why they convert

10 screenshots of up to 10, the first 6 shown here. The first 3 show in search results when there's no preview video.

  1. Screenshot 4: Keep crews moving forward.
  2. Screenshot 5: Answer customers without the scramble.
  3. Screenshot 6: Get paid the same day.
  1. #1In search results

    Stop calling around for updates.

    • crew updatesnot in name
    What it shows
A photo feed with “Now”, “2m” and “4m” time tags, and a project list with a Johnson House card, under a tagline about seeing what crews are doing as they do it.
    Why it converts
Opens on a problem the buyer knows, then shows the fix in the same frame. The headline is large and the photo feed shows what the app does without a feature list.
  2. #2In search results

    Connect the field and office.

    • photo syncingnot in name
    What it shows
A crew member holding a phone below a photo feed with a “Now” tag. The small line says photos sync with no uploads and no waiting.
    Why it converts
Names the gap between the job site and the office. A real worker in work gear makes the user type clear. The small line holds the proof point, so it may be skipped at thumbnail size.
  3. #3In search results

Share updates so everyone is informed.

    • share updatesnot in name
    What it shows
A roof photo with three workers and a circled spot, and a chat in English and Spanish: “Communicate in any language”.
    Why it converts
Shows a team use, not a single-user one. The English and Spanish chat makes the language claim visible instead of only stated.
  4. #4

    Keep crews moving forward.

    • tasksnot in name
    What it shows
A task card, “Assign & complete tasks for any job”, with three job photos, above a worker climbing a ladder.
    Why it converts
Adds task assignment as a separate reason to install. The headline is a benefit, but it is vague. The task card is the only part that says what the feature is.
  5. #5

    Answer customers without the scramble.

    • reportsnot in name
    What it shows
Two people looking at tablets, and a card that reads “Create and send professional reports and updates.”
    Why it converts
Speaks to the customer-facing side of the job. The photo carries the mood and the card text is small, so the feature itself is easy to miss.
  6. #6

    Get paid the same day.

    • get paidnot in name
    What it shows
A large “$100” on a green brush stroke, with Enter Card, Tap to Pay and Share Link buttons under “Request and collect payments right from your phone”.
    Why it converts
Ends on money, a clear outcome for a business owner. The big amount and three payment options are readable at a glance. The headline is the app's own claim.

Icon and design system

What makes the page read as one brand at a glance.

120px
60px
40px
  • One idea, a camera with a map pin, hints at job-site photos before the name is read.
  • The letter C inside the pin ties the icon to the name. It is the only text and it is large.
  • The solid blue differs from the cream screenshots, but the blue brush strokes and blue buttons inside the gallery echo it.
  1. 01

    Bold headline

Most images open with a short, heavy headline in black on cream.

  2. 02

    Problem first, then the fix

The first image names a pain, calling around for updates. The next images each give one benefit: connect, share, assign, answer, get paid.

  3. 03

    Real workers, real job sites

Some photos of crews on roofs and ladders show who the app is for.

  4. 04

One small UI card on most images

Most images show a single card, such as a photo feed, a task list or payment buttons. The screen is a prop for the headline, not a full app view.

  5. 05

    Hand-drawn marks as a system

Yellow underlines, circles, arrows and brush strokes repeat on most images. They guide the eye and make the set feel like one piece.

Where the points are

  1. Use the rest of the app name+22 pts

20 characters are free. Add the next most important search term.

  2. Ask happy users for a rating+2 pts

4.8 stars from 31,765 ratings. Apple's in-app rating prompt can be shown up to 3 times a year; show it right after a user finishes something in the app.

  3. Check caption terms against your subtitle and keywords

6 caption terms aren't in the app name: crew updates, photo syncing, share updates, tasks, reports, get paid. Captions don't count for search; the subtitle and the 100-character keyword field do.

Apply it to your app

A checklist for your next product page update.

  • Start with a problem your buyer says out loud, then show the fix in the same frame.
  • Write headlines as outcomes in plain words, and keep them to one short sentence.
  • Show one feature per image, with one small piece of UI.
  • Use photos of your real users at work so a visitor sees who the app is for.
  • Repeat one visual device, such as underlines or brush strokes, across the whole set.
  • Put the key line in large type. Small supporting text may not be read in search results.
How it works

How the ASO score works

  1. 01

    App name, 25 points

Up to 10 for how much of Apple's 30 characters it uses, 10 for a brand + keyword structure, 5 when keywords fill half the name or more.

  2. 02

    Screenshots, 35 points

Captions on every image, captions that name searched features, a first screenshot that shows the main use, one design system, readability at search size, and a trust signal.

  3. 03

    Ratings, 25 points

Up to 15 for the average (from 4.0, full marks at 4.8) and 10 for the count (from 1,000, full marks at 100,000 ratings).

  4. 04

    Freshness, 15 points

Full marks for an update in the last 30 days, falling to zero at 180 days. 85+ is excellent, 70+ strong, 50+ fair.

FAQ

Common questions

What is an ASO score?

A 100-point check of the parts of an App Store page you control: the app name, screenshots, ratings and how recently the app was updated. It's our own scoring rule, shown in full on this page, not a number from Apple. Use it to compare your page with apps that already sell well in your category.

How long can an app name be on the App Store?

30 characters. Apple also gives you a 30-character subtitle and a 100-character keyword field for more terms.

Which screenshots show up in App Store search results?

The first one to three, when the app has no preview video. That's why the first three should cover the main reasons people download. CompanyCam uses them for crew updates, photo syncing and share updates.

How many screenshots can an iPhone app have?

Up to 10 per device size. Apple recommends focusing each screenshot after the first on one main benefit or feature. CompanyCam uses 10.

Where do the download and revenue numbers come from?

They're third-party estimates for the US App Store, not figures reported by the developer. Treat them as a sense of scale. Growth compares the latest month with the month before.

Do screenshot captions help an app rank in search?

Apple says search results use text matches in the app name, subtitle, keywords and primary category, plus user behavior such as downloads, ratings and reviews. Captions aren't on that list: they help people who already see the app decide to download. When a caption names something people search for, put that term in the keyword field too.
