Screenshots and why they convert

6 screenshots of up to 10. The first 3 show in search results when there's no preview video.

    Clean Up iPhone & iCloud

    • clean upnot in name
    • icloudnot in name
    What it shows
A storage bar split by Photos, Videos, Apps, Mails and Others, a “Free Up Space” button, and a list of Photos & Videos (97 GB), iCloud (128 GB) and Mails (69 GB). A “5M+ Users” line with five stars sits at the bottom.
    Why it converts
Says what the app does and what it works on in the first line. The storage bar shows the problem at a glance. The user count is the app's own claim, placed in the first image where it is seen early.
  2. #2In search results

    Optimize Storage

    • storagein name
    What it shows
A before and after pair of storage bars, from 487.1 GB used to 74.9 GB used of 512 GB. A “Tap to clean with AI” button sits between them, with “You have cleaned 412,2 GB” and “You saved 3.2 hours” below.
    Why it converts
Shows the result first, then the one tap that gets there. The numbers are large, so the outcome reads quickly.
  3. #3In search results

    Delete Duplicates Photos

    • duplicate photosnot in name
    What it shows
A duplicate photos list with groups of similar pictures, “BEST” tags, and one picked photo enlarged outside the phone frame. A bar at the bottom reads “Delete 286 duplicates (Save 9,2 GB)”.
    Why it converts
Names a task people look for and shows it working. The bottom button states the action and the space saved, so the benefit is part of the control.
  4. #4

    Clean Your Inbox

    • email cleanernot in name
    What it shows
An Email Cleaner list with categories such as Social media, Promotions and Spam, each with a mail count. Checked rows are highlighted, and a bar reads “Delete 8312 Emails (Save 21,7 GB)”.
    Why it converts
Adds a second reason to install beyond photos. Highlighting the checked rows shows what will be deleted, and the bottom bar repeats the space saved.
  5. #5

    Swipe to Keep or Delete

    • swipenot in name
    What it shows
A photo card being swiped, with a green “KEEP” stamp on a tilted card. A red delete button and a green check button sit at the bottom. A counter shows 23 photos in the trash and an “Open Bin” button.
    Why it converts
Shows the interaction in one frame. The tilted card and the KEEP stamp make the swipe easy to understand without reading more text.
  6. #6

    Merge Contacts

    • contactsnot in name
    What it shows
A duplicate contacts screen with 42 duplicates. Three matching entries are checked, a green banner says “3 contact merged”, and a “Merge Contact (3)” button sits at the bottom.
    Why it converts
Covers one more clean-up job with a short verb and a clear object. The green banner shows the finished state next to the list that leads to it.

Icon and design system

What makes the page read as one brand at a glance.

120px
60px
40px
  • One symbol, a trash can, says “clean up” before the name is read.
  • The blue background matches the blue used in every screenshot, so icon and gallery look like one brand.
  • No text and little detail, so it should hold up at small sizes. The light can on blue stays clear.
  1. 01

    Big two-line captions

A large white verb line, then a second line in the same bold style. The text is big enough to read at search-result size.

  2. 02

    One job per screenshot

Most images cover one clean-up task: storage, duplicate photos, email, swipe review and contacts.

  3. 03

    Result shown in the control

Buttons such as “Delete 286 duplicates (Save 9,2 GB)” put the benefit in the action itself.

  4. 04

A shared frame across the images

Most images use a deep blue background, a dark phone screen and bright blue buttons. The set reads as one system.

  5. 05

Elements break out of the phone

Cards, banners and photos extend past the frame. This draws the eye to the part the caption talks about.

Where the points are

  1. Ask happy users for a rating+16 pts

4.2 stars from 13,014 ratings. Apple's in-app rating prompt can be shown up to 3 times a year; show it right after a user finishes something in the app.

  2. Check caption terms against your subtitle and keywords

6 caption terms aren't in the app name: clean up, icloud, duplicate photos, email cleaner, swipe, contacts. Captions don't count for search; the subtitle and the 100-character keyword field do.

Apply it to your app

A checklist for your next product page update.

  • Name the main job in screenshot 1 and show the app working on it.
  • Show a before and after number when the result is easy to measure.
  • Cover one task per screenshot, and name it in the caption.
  • Put the benefit on the button, such as the space saved.
  • Use large, high-contrast captions that stay readable when the image is small.
  • Keep one background, frame and button style across the set, and match the icon color.
How it works

How the ASO score works

  1. 01

    App name, 25 points

Up to 10 for how much of Apple's 30 characters it uses, 10 for a brand + keyword structure, 5 when keywords fill half the name or more.

  2. 02

    Screenshots, 35 points

Captions on every image, captions that name searched features, a first screenshot that shows the main use, one design system, readability at search size, and a trust signal.

  3. 03

    Ratings, 25 points

Up to 15 for the average (from 4.0, full marks at 4.8) and 10 for the count (from 1,000, full marks at 100,000 ratings).

  4. 04

    Freshness, 15 points

Full marks for an update in the last 30 days, falling to zero at 180 days. 85+ is excellent, 70+ strong, 50+ fair.

FAQ

Common questions

What is an ASO score?

A 100-point check of the parts of an App Store page you control: the app name, screenshots, ratings and how recently the app was updated. It's our own scoring rule, shown in full on this page, not a number from Apple. Use it to compare your page with apps that already sell well in your category.

How long can an app name be on the App Store?

30 characters. A common pattern is a short brand followed by the main thing people search for, like “Clean Manager: Storage Cleaner”, which uses 30. Apple also gives you a 30-character subtitle and a 100-character keyword field for more terms.

Which screenshots show up in App Store search results?

The first one to three, when the app has no preview video. That's why the first three should cover the main reasons people download. Clean Manager uses them for clean up, storage and duplicate photos.

How many screenshots can an iPhone app have?

Up to 10 per device size. Apple recommends focusing each screenshot after the first on one main benefit or feature. Clean Manager uses 6.

Where do the download and revenue numbers come from?

They're third-party estimates for the US App Store, not figures reported by the developer. Treat them as a sense of scale. Growth compares the latest month with the month before.

Do screenshot captions help an app rank in search?

Apple says search results use text matches in the app name, subtitle, keywords and primary category, plus user behavior such as downloads, ratings and reviews. Captions aren't on that list: they help people who already see the app decide to download. When a caption names something people search for, put that term in the keyword field too.
