Screenshots and why they convert

6 screenshots of up to 10. The first 3 show in search results when there's no preview video.

  1. Screenshot 4: Advanced Voice Mode
  2. Screenshot 5: Real-Time Web Search
  3. Screenshot 6: Homework Helper
  1. #1In search results

    Your Smart AI Assistant

    • ai assistantnot in name
    What it shows
A large caption above an “Ask your question” bar, with four cards around it: Voice Chat, AI Writer, Image Analysis and AI Image.
    Why it converts
Says what the app is and shows its range in one frame. It's a feature map, not a real use, so the specific examples come later.
  2. #2In search results

    Ask AI Anything

    • ask ainot in name
    What it shows
A chat with a photo of a damaged leaf, the question “Did I overwater or underwater?” and a reply about a Monstera with yellowing leaves.
    Why it converts
“Anything” is a broad word, and the plant question shows what it means in daily life. The photo also shows you can ask with an image.
  3. #3In search results

    AI Image Generator

    • ai image generatornot in name
    What it shows
A photo of an empty room, the prompt “Recreate this room in a modern minimalist style” and a furnished result.
    Why it converts
Names a feature people look for and shows before and after in one chat. The result is large enough to read at a small size.
  4. #4

    Advanced Voice Mode

    • voice modenot in name
    What it shows
A Voice Chat screen with a voice message reading “I think I'm going to miss rent this month. What ...”, “Here's what I think” and gradient voice bars.
    Why it converts
Shows a personal question you might rather say than type. “Advanced” adds little, so the example does the selling.
  5. #5

    Real-Time Web Search

    • web searchnot in name
    What it shows
The question “How much money do I need for a week in Cancun?” with source links, two beach photos and the start of an answer.
    Why it converts
Visible source links show where an answer draws from, the only proof of this kind in the set. The trip question makes the feature concrete.
  6. #6

    Homework Helper

    • homework helpernot in name
    What it shows
A notebook page with “Solve x² + 2x = 15 by factoring”, Snap and Solve buttons, a step-by-step solution and a red A+ mark.
    Why it converts
Speaks to a separate group, students, in two words people look for. The Snap and Solve buttons show the steps without more text.

Icon and design system

What makes the page read as one brand at a glance.

120px
60px
40px
  • One shape with no text, in high contrast, so it holds up at small sizes.
  • Green on black matches the screenshots, and the hexagon appears beside each ChatBox reply.
  • The mark is abstract and doesn't suggest chat, so the name does that work.
  1. 01

    A feature map first

Screenshot 1 puts four features around one question bar, a way to show an all-in-one app in a single frame. The trade-off is that no single use stands out.

  2. 02

    Feature caption, everyday example

Most captions name the feature. The prompts below them, about a plant, a room, rent, a trip and homework, show why you'd use it.

  3. 03

    One feature per screenshot

Chat, images, voice, search and homework each get one frame, in two-line captions of a few words.

  4. 04

    One dark system

Near-black backgrounds, a green glow, white captions and the same phone frame repeat on five images and carry the icon's colors.

  5. 05

    No proof points

The set shows no rating, user count, award or press mark. Source links on screenshot 5 are the closest thing to a trust signal.

Where the points are

  1. Ask happy users for a rating+4 pts

4.6 stars from 165,345 ratings. Apple's in-app rating prompt can be shown up to 3 times a year; show it right after a user finishes something in the app.

  2. Check caption terms against your subtitle and keywords

6 caption terms aren't in the app name: ai assistant, ask ai, ai image generator, voice mode, web search, homework helper. Captions don't count for search; the subtitle and the 100-character keyword field do.

Apply it to your app

A checklist for your next product page update.

  • Use real questions in your example UI, so a broad tool feels specific.
  • Give each main use its own screenshot and a short caption.
  • If your app does many things, name a concrete first use on screenshot 1 as well as the range.
  • Replace empty words like “advanced” with what the feature does.
  • Add a real rating, user count or award if you have one.
  • Carry your icon colors into the screenshot backgrounds.
How it works

How the ASO score works

  1. 01

    App name, 25 points

Up to 10 for how much of Apple's 30 characters it uses, 10 for a brand + keyword structure, 5 when keywords fill half the name or more.

  2. 02

    Screenshots, 35 points

Captions on every image, captions that name searched features, a first screenshot that shows the main use, one design system, readability at search size, and a trust signal.

  3. 03

    Ratings, 25 points

Up to 15 for the average (from 4.0, full marks at 4.8) and 10 for the count (from 1,000, full marks at 100,000 ratings).

  4. 04

    Freshness, 15 points

Full marks for an update in the last 30 days, falling to zero at 180 days. 85+ is excellent, 70+ strong, 50+ fair.

FAQ

Common questions

What is an ASO score?

A 100-point check of the parts of an App Store page you control: the app name, screenshots, ratings and how recently the app was updated. It's our own scoring rule, shown in full on this page, not a number from Apple. Use it to compare your page with apps that already sell well in your category.

How long can an app name be on the App Store?

30 characters. A common pattern is a short brand followed by the main thing people search for, like “ChatBox - AI Chat with Chatbot”, which uses 30. Apple also gives you a 30-character subtitle and a 100-character keyword field for more terms.

Which screenshots show up in App Store search results?

The first one to three, when the app has no preview video. That's why the first three should cover the main reasons people download. ChatBox uses them for ai assistant, ask ai and ai image generator.

How many screenshots can an iPhone app have?

Up to 10 per device size. Apple recommends focusing each screenshot after the first on one main benefit or feature. ChatBox uses 6.

Where do the download and revenue numbers come from?

They're third-party estimates for the US App Store, not figures reported by the developer. Treat them as a sense of scale. Growth compares the latest month with the month before.

Do screenshot captions help an app rank in search?

Apple says search results use text matches in the app name, subtitle, keywords and primary category, plus user behavior such as downloads, ratings and reviews. Captions aren't on that list: they help people who already see the app decide to download. When a caption names something people search for, put that term in the keyword field too.
