Screenshots and why they convert

8 screenshots of up to 10, the first 6 shown here. The first 3 show in search results when there's no preview video.

  1. Screenshot 4: SIGN docs on the go
  2. Screenshot 5: DIGITIZE ID cards and passport
  3. Screenshot 6: EXTRACT and edit any text
  1. #1In search results

    SCAN with your Phone

    • scannot in name
    What it shows
A phone showing a scanned text page with a green scan line, and four filter thumbnails at the bottom: No shadow, Original, Lighten, Magic Color.
    Why it converts
Opens with the core action, scanning, in one large word. The filter row shows that the scan can be cleaned up, not only captured.
  2. #2In search results

    SAVE as PDF,Word,TXT,JPG or Excel

    • pdfnot in name
    • wordnot in name
    What it shows
A scanned page on a desk, with colored file-type tabs (.Excel, .JPG, .TXT, .Word, .PDF) above an editing toolbar.
    Why it converts
Names the file formats a visitor may be looking for. The colored tabs make the list easy to scan at a glance.
  3. #3In search results

    • sharenot in name
    What it shows
A share sheet with WhatsApp, Line, Send to PC, Email and More, above options such as Share PDF, Share JPG and Share txt.
    Why it converts
Shows what happens after the scan: the file leaves the app. App icons people already know make the step clear.
  4. #4

    SIGN docs on the go

    • signnot in name
    What it shows
A document with highlighted text and a tool panel: Smudge Tool, Ink annotations, Add watermark, Add text, plus a Signature button.
    Why it converts
Adds a second use beyond scanning. The tool labels are large enough to read, and the caption says the user can do this anywhere.
  5. #5

    DIGITIZE ID cards and passport

    • id cardnot in name
    • passportnot in name
    What it shows
A sample two-sided ID card copy with a “Make it now” button and ID Card and Passport tabs. A note on the card reads “A must-have feature!”
    Why it converts
Speaks to a specific job people look for.
  6. #6

    EXTRACT and edit any text

    • ocrin name
    • extract textnot in name
    What it shows
A text page with a COPY bubble and selection handles, and the Word tab selected, showing the recognized text enlarged.
    Why it converts
Shows OCR, which the app's name already mentions, as a result: text you can copy and edit. The enlarged panel keeps the text readable.

Icon and design system

What makes the page read as one brand at a glance.

120px
60px
40px
  • One mark, the letters CS, with no photo or UI copy.
  • The plus sign on the teal band points to the Plus version, and the teal matches the highlight color in the screenshots.
  • Large letters and flat color should stay clear at small sizes. The plus sign is the small detail.
  1. 01

    One verb per screenshot

Each caption starts with a large action word: scan, save, share, sign, digitize, extract. The job is clear before the small line is read.

  2. 02

    Small second line adds detail

A thin line under the verb names formats, destinations or documents. The big word and the detail work as a pair.

  3. 03

    Mostly the same layout

Most images share the caption position, white background and phone frame, with a teal square behind the verb. The set reads as one story.

  4. 04

    Callouts overlap the phone

File tabs, the share sheet and the filter row sit over the screen edge.

  5. 05

    Printed names people already know

PDF, Word, Excel, WhatsApp, Line, Email and passport appear on the images. Familiar names show the use at once.

Where the points are

  1. Ship an update+4 pts

The last update was 75 days ago. A new version also refreshes the "What's New" notes people read before they download.

  2. Ask happy users for a rating+4 pts

4.9 stars from 17,406 ratings. Apple's in-app rating prompt can be shown up to 3 times a year; show it right after a user finishes something in the app.

  3. Check caption terms against your subtitle and keywords

8 caption terms aren't in the app name: scan, pdf, word, share, sign, id card, passport, extract text. Captions don't count for search; the subtitle and the 100-character keyword field do.

Apply it to your app

A checklist for your next product page update.

  • Open with the main action as one large word, then add a short detail line.
  • Name the file types, apps or documents your users already use.
  • Give each screenshot one job and one caption.
  • Overlay the key control or result on the screen edge so it stays readable when small.
  • Keep the icon and screenshot accent color the same.
  • If you have ratings, awards or press, print them on an early screenshot. This set has none.
How it works

How the ASO score works

  1. 01

    App name, 25 points

Up to 10 for how much of Apple's 30 characters it uses, 10 for a brand + keyword structure, 5 when keywords fill half the name or more.

  2. 02

    Screenshots, 35 points

Captions on every image, captions that name searched features, a first screenshot that shows the main use, one design system, readability at search size, and a trust signal.

  3. 03

    Ratings, 25 points

Up to 15 for the average (from 4.0, full marks at 4.8) and 10 for the count (from 1,000, full marks at 100,000 ratings).

  4. 04

    Freshness, 15 points

Full marks for an update in the last 30 days, falling to zero at 180 days. 85+ is excellent, 70+ strong, 50+ fair.

FAQ

Common questions

What is an ASO score?

A 100-point check of the parts of an App Store page you control: the app name, screenshots, ratings and how recently the app was updated. It's our own scoring rule, shown in full on this page, not a number from Apple. Use it to compare your page with apps that already sell well in your category.

How long can an app name be on the App Store?

30 characters. A common pattern is a short brand followed by the main thing people search for, like “CamScanner + | OCR Scanner”, which uses 26. Apple also gives you a 30-character subtitle and a 100-character keyword field for more terms.

Which screenshots show up in App Store search results?

The first one to three, when the app has no preview video. That's why the first three should cover the main reasons people download. CamScanner + uses them for scan, pdf and share.

How many screenshots can an iPhone app have?

Up to 10 per device size. Apple recommends focusing each screenshot after the first on one main benefit or feature. CamScanner + uses 8.

Where do the download and revenue numbers come from?

They're third-party estimates for the US App Store, not figures reported by the developer. Treat them as a sense of scale. Growth compares the latest month with the month before.

Do screenshot captions help an app rank in search?

Apple says search results use text matches in the app name, subtitle, keywords and primary category, plus user behavior such as downloads, ratings and reviews. Captions aren't on that list: they help people who already see the app decide to download. When a caption names something people search for, put that term in the keyword field too.
