Screenshots and why they convert

5 screenshots of up to 10. The first 3 show in search results when there's no preview video.

  2. Screenshot 5: Guiding users worldwide
  1. #1In search results

    India’s most trusted astrology app

    • astrologyin name
    What it shows
A woman in a green sari smiling on a yellow background, under the printed claim “India’s most trusted astrology app”. No app screen is shown.
    Why it converts
Names the category in the first frame and states a trust claim, which is the app’s own claim. It shows a person but no product, so a visitor still can’t see what the app does.
  2. #2In search results

    Chat with India’s best astrologers

    • astrologersnot in name
    What it shows
An astrologer list with names, experience, languages, a rating and Chat buttons. A banner for a celebrity astrologer with “8M followers” overlaps the phone frame.
    Why it converts
Shows the main action, chatting with a person, and the real list people choose from.
  3. #3In search results

All kinds of guides in one app

    • guidesnot in name
    What it shows
A home screen with Daily Horoscope, Free Kundli and Kundli Matching tiles, topic categories, and a pulled-out panel of astrology, palmistry, numerology and tarot icons.
    Why it converts
Shows how many topics the app covers. The caption is general, though; it doesn’t name one thing a visitor would look for, and the screen is busy.
  4. #4

    Chat anytime with astrologers

    • chatnot in name
    What it shows
The astrologer list again, with Online badges and Chat buttons on each card.
    Why it converts
Repeats the chat idea from screenshot 2 with a similar screen. The “Online” badges support “anytime”, but the set gets no new reason to download here.
  5. #5

    Guiding users worldwide

      What it shows
A map of South and Central Asia with purple pins, a blue dot and country names. The map fills the image and no phone is shown.
      Why it converts
Gives a sense of reach, but it says nothing about what the app does.

    Icon and design system

What makes the page read as one brand at a glance.

    120px
    60px
    40px
    • One symbol, a white knot, sits on a yellow diamond. The shape is simple and easy to spot. There is no text.
    • The symbol does not say “astrology” by itself, so the name has to carry the meaning.
    • Yellow in the icon matches the yellow backgrounds in most screenshots, so the two feel related.
    1. 01

      Trust claim first

The first image is a person and a printed claim, “India’s most trusted astrology app”. It is the app’s own claim, shown before any product screen.

    2. 02

      Yellow background, large black captions

Short black headlines sit on yellow with a faint network pattern. Contrast is high and the headline reads at small size.

    3. 03

Real expert profiles as the product

Two images show a list of astrologers with photos, experience and Chat buttons. The people are the product, so the list sells the service.

    4. 04

      Breadth shown as a toolbox

One image pulls a panel of topic icons out of the phone: astrology, palmistry, numerology, tarot and more. It shows range in one glance.

    5. 05

      Reach shown without the product

The last image is a map with pins. It suggests a wide audience but shows no feature.

    Where the points are

    1. Ask happy users for a rating+19 pts

4.3 stars from 55 ratings. Apple's in-app rating prompt can be shown up to 3 times a year; show it right after a user finishes something in the app.

    2. Check caption terms against your subtitle and keywords

3 caption terms aren't in the app name: astrologers, guides, chat. Captions don't count for search; the subtitle and the 100-character keyword field do.

    Apply it to your app

A checklist for your next product page update.

    • Show the product working in screenshot 1, not only a person and a claim.
    • Put a trust claim next to a product screen so it has something to back it.
    • Give each screenshot a different reason to download. Don’t repeat one screen.
    • Use the words your users use in the caption, such as a feature name.
    • Keep captions in large dark type on a plain color for contrast at thumbnail size.
    • Use screenshot slots on features, and treat a map or other proof image as a supporting extra.
    How it works

    How the ASO score works

    1. 01

      App name, 25 points

Up to 10 for how much of Apple's 30 characters it uses, 10 for a brand + keyword structure, 5 when keywords fill half the name or more.

    2. 02

      Screenshots, 35 points

Captions on every image, captions that name searched features, a first screenshot that shows the main use, one design system, readability at search size, and a trust signal.

    3. 03

      Ratings, 25 points

Up to 15 for the average (from 4.0, full marks at 4.8) and 10 for the count (from 1,000, full marks at 100,000 ratings).

    4. 04

      Freshness, 15 points

Full marks for an update in the last 30 days, falling to zero at 180 days. 85+ is excellent, 70+ strong, 50+ fair.

    FAQ

    Common questions

    What is an ASO score?

A 100-point check of the parts of an App Store page you control: the app name, screenshots, ratings and how recently the app was updated. It's our own scoring rule, shown in full on this page, not a number from Apple. Use it to compare your page with apps that already sell well in your category.

How long can an app name be on the App Store?

30 characters. A common pattern is a short brand followed by the main thing people search for, like “AstroKarma: Astrology & Kundli”, which uses 30. Apple also gives you a 30-character subtitle and a 100-character keyword field for more terms.

Which screenshots show up in App Store search results?

The first one to three, when the app has no preview video. That's why the first three should cover the main reasons people download. AstroKarma uses them for astrology, astrologers and guides.

How many screenshots can an iPhone app have?

Up to 10 per device size. Apple recommends focusing each screenshot after the first on one main benefit or feature. AstroKarma uses 5.

Where do the download and revenue numbers come from?

They're third-party estimates for the US App Store, not figures reported by the developer. Treat them as a sense of scale. Growth compares the latest month with the month before.

Do screenshot captions help an app rank in search?

Apple says search results use text matches in the app name, subtitle, keywords and primary category, plus user behavior such as downloads, ratings and reviews. Captions aren't on that list: they help people who already see the app decide to download. When a caption names something people search for, put that term in the keyword field too.
