Screenshots and why they convert

8 screenshots of up to 10, the first 6 shown here. The first 3 show in search results when there's no preview video.

  1. Screenshot 4: Learn optimal, science-based techniques.
  2. Screenshot 5: Built by Exercise Physiologists (M.Sc) - Message us anytime!
  3. Screenshot 6: Optimal training volume for each muscle group.
  1. #1In search results

    Workouts that adapt to you.

    • workoutsnot in name
    What it shows
The AITOFIT wordmark above a workout list: Single Leg Press 3 sets x 8 reps and Lat Pulldown 3 sets x 10 reps, with green set buttons marked 8/8 and 10/10.
    Why it converts
The first image shows a real workout screen, so a visitor sees a gym log right away. The caption promises a plan that changes with the user, but the screen alone doesn't show how it adapts.
  2. #2In search results

University of Jyväskylä 4.9 (5119 reviews)

      What it shows
A university logo, a 4.9 star rating with “5119 reviews (Google, Apple)”, and a “Great job! Workout completed.” screen with weekly bars at 100%.
      Why it converts
Puts a named institution and a rating next to the product in the second slot. These are the app's own printed claims. There is no feature caption, so this image says who backs it, not what it does.
    • #3In search results

Always know what to do at the gym.

      • gymin name
      What it shows
A “Hi Emma!” week-1 program grid: green Workout days, dark Rest days, and a marked Today tile.
      Why it converts
Speaks to a common worry, not knowing what to do at the gym. The Mon-to-Sun grid makes the answer visible in one look.
    • #4

      Learn optimal, science-based techniques.

      • techniquesnot in name
      What it shows
A Single Leg Press exercise page: a video of a person on a leg press, muscle tags for quadriceps and glutes, a Change Exercise button and written instructions.
      Why it converts
Shows the exercise help that comes with each move. “Science-based” is the app's own claim.
    • #5

Built by Exercise Physiologists (M.Sc) - Message us anytime!

        What it shows
An About us screen with a photo of two men in matching black AITOFIT hoodies and the start of a “Who we are” text.
        Why it converts
A human face for the team and an invitation to message them.
      • #6

Optimal training volume for each muscle group.

        • training volumenot in name
        What it shows
A Weekly volume list with a dark row per muscle group and its sets, from Back 9 sets to Glutes 15 sets.
        Why it converts
Names a concrete feature in plain words. The rows are large and high contrast, so the list reads even when small.

      Icon and design system

What makes the page read as one brand at a glance.

      120px
      60px
      40px
      • The icon is the app name only, with “AI” in teal. It carries no picture of a workout or a gym.
      • The text is the whole mark, so the name is readable at a glance, but it says nothing about fitness on its own.
      • Dark navy with teal matches no strong color in the screenshots, which use white backgrounds and green buttons.
      1. 01

        Plain sentence captions

Most captions are one black sentence at the top. The bold part is the benefit, for example “to you.” in the first image.

      2. 02

Same white layout on most images

Most images have a caption on a pale background, then a phone with the app below. Swiping feels like one set.

      3. 03

Green for sets and workout days

Set buttons and workout days use green in more than one image.

      4. 04

Credibility in slots 2 and 5

A university name with a rating, and a team of exercise physiologists. Both are the app's own claims.

      5. 05

        Captions name a need

“Always know what to do at the gym” and “Optimal training volume” describe things a gym-goer looks for.

      Where the points are

      1. Ask happy users for a rating+10 pts

5.0 stars from 3 ratings. Apple's in-app rating prompt can be shown up to 3 times a year; show it right after a user finishes something in the app.

      2. Check caption terms against your subtitle and keywords

3 caption terms aren't in the app name: workouts, techniques, training volume. Captions don't count for search; the subtitle and the 100-character keyword field do.

      Apply it to your app

A checklist for your next product page update.

      • Show a real, working screen in the first image.
      • Write each caption as one short sentence about one benefit.
      • If you print a rating or a partner name, say where it comes from.
      • Keep trust images short: one proof, one line.
      • Use the same layout and color meaning on every image.
      • Make the icon show your category, not only your name.
      How it works

      How the ASO score works

      1. 01

        App name, 25 points

Up to 10 for how much of Apple's 30 characters it uses, 10 for a brand + keyword structure, 5 when keywords fill half the name or more.

      2. 02

        Screenshots, 35 points

Captions on every image, captions that name searched features, a first screenshot that shows the main use, one design system, readability at search size, and a trust signal.

      3. 03

        Ratings, 25 points

Up to 15 for the average (from 4.0, full marks at 4.8) and 10 for the count (from 1,000, full marks at 100,000 ratings).

      4. 04

        Freshness, 15 points

Full marks for an update in the last 30 days, falling to zero at 180 days. 85+ is excellent, 70+ strong, 50+ fair.

      FAQ

      Common questions

      What is an ASO score?

A 100-point check of the parts of an App Store page you control: the app name, screenshots, ratings and how recently the app was updated. It's our own scoring rule, shown in full on this page, not a number from Apple. Use it to compare your page with apps that already sell well in your category.

How long can an app name be on the App Store?

30 characters. A common pattern is a short brand followed by the main thing people search for, like “AITOFIT - Gym Workout Coach”, which uses 27. Apple also gives you a 30-character subtitle and a 100-character keyword field for more terms.

Which screenshots show up in App Store search results?

The first one to three, when the app has no preview video. That's why the first three should cover the main reasons people download. AITOFIT uses them for workouts and gym.

How many screenshots can an iPhone app have?

Up to 10 per device size. Apple recommends focusing each screenshot after the first on one main benefit or feature. AITOFIT uses 8.

Where do the download and revenue numbers come from?

They're third-party estimates for the US App Store, not figures reported by the developer. Treat them as a sense of scale. Growth compares the latest month with the month before.

Do screenshot captions help an app rank in search?

Apple says search results use text matches in the app name, subtitle, keywords and primary category, plus user behavior such as downloads, ratings and reviews. Captions aren't on that list: they help people who already see the app decide to download. When a caption names something people search for, put that term in the keyword field too.
