Screenshots and why they convert

8 screenshots of up to 10, the first 6 shown here. The first 3 show in search results when there's no preview video.

  1. #1In search results

    AI VOICE TRANSLATOR

    • voice translatorin name
    • translatorin name
    What it shows
Flags across the top, the title “AI Voice Translator”, a laurel badge reading “100+ Languages Translation”, and a mic and translate icon over a large glossy “AI”.
    Why it converts
Shows flags, the app title and a language-count badge. It shows no screen in use yet, and the “100+” is the app's own claim, so the visitor still has to guess how it works.
  2. #2In search results

    Study Work · Travel

    • travelnot in name
    What it shows
A hand tapping a mic button on a phone, with an English to Spanish card: “Hello, I want to check in” and its Spanish version. Three chips read Study, Work and Travel.
    Why it converts
Shows the core action in use and gives three situations to picture. The caption is only three single words, so it names uses but no benefit.
  3. #3In search results

    Smart Recognition Live Translation

    • live translationnot in name
    What it shows
A two-sided conversation view: an English question on top, the Spanish version below, with a recording timer and flag badges.
    Why it converts
A realistic travel phrase makes the live feature easy to grasp. The large white caption on a dark base reads at small size.
  4. #4

Dual Input Text & voice Translator

    • text translatornot in name
    • voice translatorin name
    What it shows
A phone with the English to Spanish text screen, a mic button and the keyboard open, translating “Please give me a blanket, thank you.”
    Why it converts
Tells visitors they can type or speak. The caption and the result text are large and clear.
  5. #5

Photo Translator Instant Scan & Precise Translation

    • photo translatornot in name
    • scannot in name
    What it shows
A beverage menu photographed in English with its Spanish translation laid over it, plus a pulled-out photo of the original menu.
    Why it converts
A before and after on a real object shows the camera feature at a glance. Menus are a common reason to translate while travelling.
  6. #6

Tap to Record AI Smart Summaries

    • ai summariesnot in name
    • recordnot in name
    What it shows
A recording screen with an AI Summary tab, a long block of summary text, and Translate and Copy buttons, under a sound wave and a mic icon.
    Why it converts
Adds a second use beyond translation: an AI summary of a recording. The summary text is too small to read in a thumbnail, so the caption carries the message.

Icon and design system

What makes the page read as one brand at a glance.

120px
60px
40px
  • A microphone plus a translate symbol shows both parts of the name in one image.
  • The red background carries into the screenshots, so the icon and the gallery look like one brand.
  • The “AI” text is large and simple, so it stays readable at small sizes.
  1. 01

    Red base across the set

Most screenshots use the icon's red, with a bold white headline and a cream sub-line. It reads as one set.

  2. 02

    Real phrases in the phone

Check-in, a blanket request and a drinks menu. Each example is something a traveler would say or read.

  3. 03

    One feature per image

Live voice, text and voice input, photo scan and recorded summaries each get their own screenshot.

  4. 04

    Feature names as captions

Captions such as “Photo Translator” and “Live Translation” name features people look for, but state few benefits.

  5. 05

    Printed claim, no outside proof

“100+ Languages” is the app's own claim. No rating, award or press quote appears on these images.

Where the points are

  1. Ask happy users for a rating+16 pts

4.5 stars from 387 ratings. Apple's in-app rating prompt can be shown up to 3 times a year; show it right after a user finishes something in the app.

  2. Ship an update+3 pts

The last update was 61 days ago. A new version also refreshes the "What's New" notes people read before they download.

  3. Check caption terms against your subtitle and keywords

7 caption terms aren't in the app name: travel, live translation, text translator, photo translator, scan, ai summaries, record. Captions don't count for search; the subtitle and the 100-character keyword field do.

Apply it to your app

A checklist for your next product page update.

  • Show the app in use in the first screenshot, not only the title.
  • Use real example phrases or data on screen, not placeholder text.
  • Give each screenshot one feature and one large headline.
  • Reuse your icon's color in the screenshot backgrounds.
  • Keep small UI text short, or enlarge it, so it reads in search results.
  • Add a rating, award or user count if you have a real one.
How it works

How the ASO score works

  1. 01

    App name, 25 points

Up to 10 for how much of Apple's 30 characters it uses, 10 for a brand + keyword structure, 5 when keywords fill half the name or more.

  2. 02

    Screenshots, 35 points

Captions on every image, captions that name searched features, a first screenshot that shows the main use, one design system, readability at search size, and a trust signal.

  3. 03

    Ratings, 25 points

Up to 15 for the average (from 4.0, full marks at 4.8) and 10 for the count (from 1,000, full marks at 100,000 ratings).

  4. 04

    Freshness, 15 points

Full marks for an update in the last 30 days, falling to zero at 180 days. 85+ is excellent, 70+ strong, 50+ fair.

FAQ

Common questions

What is an ASO score?

A 100-point check of the parts of an App Store page you control: the app name, screenshots, ratings and how recently the app was updated. It's our own scoring rule, shown in full on this page, not a number from Apple. Use it to compare your page with apps that already sell well in your category.

How long can an app name be on the App Store?

30 characters. A common pattern is a short brand followed by the main thing people search for, like “AI Voice Translate:Translator”, which uses 29. Apple also gives you a 30-character subtitle and a 100-character keyword field for more terms.

Which screenshots show up in App Store search results?

The first one to three, when the app has no preview video. That's why the first three should cover the main reasons people download. AI Voice Translate uses them for voice translator, travel and live translation.

How many screenshots can an iPhone app have?

Up to 10 per device size. Apple recommends focusing each screenshot after the first on one main benefit or feature. AI Voice Translate uses 8.

Where do the download and revenue numbers come from?

They're third-party estimates for the US App Store, not figures reported by the developer. Treat them as a sense of scale. Growth compares the latest month with the month before.

Do screenshot captions help an app rank in search?

Apple says search results use text matches in the app name, subtitle, keywords and primary category, plus user behavior such as downloads, ratings and reviews. Captions aren't on that list: they help people who already see the app decide to download. When a caption names something people search for, put that term in the keyword field too.
