Screenshots and why they convert

7 screenshots of up to 10, the first 6 shown here. The first 3 show in search results when there's no preview video.

  1. Screenshot 4: Image to Video
  2. Screenshot 5: Make Your Pet Sing
  3. Screenshot 6: Text to Video
  1. #1In search results

    AI Video Generator

    • ai video generatorin name
    What it shows
A photo of a man plus a TikTok dance clip, combined into a video of him doing the dance, with a frame timeline below.
    Why it converts
Shows the input (your photo + a dance) and the result in one frame, so a visitor sees what the app makes. The caption names the product category, though it does not say what you get from it.
  2. #2In search results

    Birthday Effect

    • birthdaynot in name
    What it shows
A smiling woman holding a cake that reads “Happy Birthday”, with a small portrait inset and a video play bar.
    Why it converts
Names one occasion people make videos for.
  3. #3In search results

    AI Dance Generator

    • ai dancenot in name
    What it shows
A “Your Photo” and a “Cast Photo” combined into a crowd of figures in dark outfits and cone hats, with a timeline strip.
    Why it converts
Repeats the photo-plus-reference pattern from the first image for another use.
  4. #4

    Image to Video

    • image to videonot in name
    What it shows
Two portrait insets with arrows pointing to two people singing at a microphone against an orange background.
    Why it converts
Names a feature people look for as a plain phrase. The arrows link each photo to a person in the video, but the scene is busy.
  5. #5

    Make Your Pet Sing

    • petnot in name
    What it shows
A dog looking at the camera, with a small inset of the original photo and a frame timeline.
    Why it converts
A concrete, easy-to-picture use case. It speaks to pet owners and shows the original photo next to the result.
  6. #6

    Text to Video

    • text to videonot in name
    What it shows
A glass-like pineapple being sliced, above a text box holding a long written prompt.
    Why it converts
Shows the text-in, video-out idea. The prompt text is small and long, so it will not read at search-result size.

Icon and design system

What makes the page read as one brand at a glance.

120px
60px
40px
  • One shape, a play button, points to video before the name is read.
  • The purple-to-orange gradient matches the caption color in the screenshots, so icon and gallery look like one brand.
  • No text and few details, so it stays clear at small sizes. The dark background suits dark mode.
  1. 01

Gradient first line, white second line

Most captions put a short phrase in a purple-to-orange gradient, then a large white line. The type is big and high-contrast on a dark background.

  2. 02

Caption names a use or feature

Most captions name what people want to make: video generator, dance generator, image to video, text to video. They name the feature but not the benefit.

  3. 03

    Input shown next to output

Several images place the source photo as an inset or a labeled tile beside the finished video. A visitor sees what goes in and what comes out.

  4. 04

    Same layout on most images

Most images use one phone, a centered two-line caption, a dark background and a timeline strip or play bar. The set reads as one system.

  5. 05

Many use cases in one gallery

Dance, birthday, pet and text prompt each address a different visitor. No rating, award or user count appears on any image.

Where the points are

  1. Ask happy users for a rating+14 pts

4.3 stars from 14,662 ratings. Apple's in-app rating prompt can be shown up to 3 times a year; show it right after a user finishes something in the app.

  2. Check caption terms against your subtitle and keywords

5 caption terms aren't in the app name: birthday, ai dance, image to video, pet, text to video. Captions don't count for search; the subtitle and the 100-character keyword field do.

Apply it to your app

A checklist for your next product page update.

  • Show what goes in and what comes out in the first screenshot.
  • Use a short two-line caption in large type with strong contrast.
  • Label the source photo, such as “Your Photo”, so the input is clear.
  • Give each screenshot a different use case that a visitor can picture.
  • Keep prompt or UI text large enough to read at thumbnail size, or crop it out.
  • Add a rating, award or user count if you have one. None is shown here.
How it works

How the ASO score works

  1. 01

    App name, 25 points

Up to 10 for how much of Apple's 30 characters it uses, 10 for a brand + keyword structure, 5 when keywords fill half the name or more.

  2. 02

    Screenshots, 35 points

Captions on every image, captions that name searched features, a first screenshot that shows the main use, one design system, readability at search size, and a trust signal.

  3. 03

    Ratings, 25 points

Up to 15 for the average (from 4.0, full marks at 4.8) and 10 for the count (from 1,000, full marks at 100,000 ratings).

  4. 04

    Freshness, 15 points

Full marks for an update in the last 30 days, falling to zero at 180 days. 85+ is excellent, 70+ strong, 50+ fair.

FAQ

Common questions

What is an ASO score?

A 100-point check of the parts of an App Store page you control: the app name, screenshots, ratings and how recently the app was updated. It's our own scoring rule, shown in full on this page, not a number from Apple. Use it to compare your page with apps that already sell well in your category.

How long can an app name be on the App Store?

30 characters. Apple also gives you a 30-character subtitle and a 100-character keyword field for more terms.

Which screenshots show up in App Store search results?

The first one to three, when the app has no preview video. That's why the first three should cover the main reasons people download. AI Video Generator + Creator uses them for ai video generator, birthday and ai dance.

How many screenshots can an iPhone app have?

Up to 10 per device size. Apple recommends focusing each screenshot after the first on one main benefit or feature. AI Video Generator + Creator uses 7.

Where do the download and revenue numbers come from?

They're third-party estimates for the US App Store, not figures reported by the developer. Treat them as a sense of scale. Growth compares the latest month with the month before.

Do screenshot captions help an app rank in search?

Apple says search results use text matches in the app name, subtitle, keywords and primary category, plus user behavior such as downloads, ratings and reviews. Captions aren't on that list: they help people who already see the app decide to download. When a caption names something people search for, put that term in the keyword field too.
