Screenshots and why they convert

4 screenshots of up to 10. The first 3 show in search results when there's no preview video.

    Hundreds of Viral Templates

    • templatesnot in name
    What it shows
A small round selfie with an arrow pointing to two styled photos of the same woman, one in a restaurant and one in a poppy field.
    Why it converts
Shows the result first: one selfie becomes finished, shareable photos. The caption names templates, a feature people look for, and the large white type reads at small size.
  2. #2In search results

    Make Edits in a Tap

    • editsnot in name
    What it shows
A text prompt reading “Make me a Parisian girl” above an “After” photo, with the original photo in a corner inset.
    Why it converts
Shows the input, the prompt and the output together. A visitor sees how little effort an edit takes. “In a tap” is a benefit, not a feature name.
  3. #3In search results

AI Photo Editor Smart & Precise

    • ai photo editornot in name
    What it shows
An edited photo of a person in front of the Eiffel Tower with a “Paris VLOG” text sticker, plus a Generate button and undo and redo controls.
    Why it converts
Names the app's category in the caption, so a visitor knows what kind of tool this is. The editor screen shows there is more to it than one-tap filters. “Smart & Precise” is a general claim with no proof on the image.
  4. #4

    Perfect Shots From One Selfie

    • selfienot in name
    What it shows
A Trending screen with a grid of styled portraits in different settings and looks.
    Why it converts
States the promise in plain words: one selfie in, many photos out. The grid gives a sense of range. “Perfect” is the app's own claim.

Icon and design system

What makes the page read as one brand at a glance.

120px
60px
40px
  • One bold white shape on a flat dark background. There is no text.
  • The icon does not say “photo” or “AI” on its own. The name and screenshots carry that meaning.
  • The near-black background matches the dark backgrounds of the screenshots, so icon and gallery look like one brand.
  • Simple shape with no fine detail, so it should stay clear at small sizes.
  1. 01

    Two-weight captions

A light line and a bold line in white on dark grey. The bold line carries the key phrase.

  2. 02

    Result before explanation

The first image shows finished photos from a selfie. How it works comes in the later images.

  3. 03

Before and after in one frame

A corner inset holds the original photo, so the change is visible without reading anything.

  4. 04

    Real prompt on screen

The prompt “Make me a Parisian girl” appears above the edited photo. A visitor sees what to type.

  5. 05

    Photos do the selling

Photos of people and places fill most images.

Where the points are

  1. Ask happy users for a rating+10 pts

4.3 stars from 81,553 ratings. Apple's in-app rating prompt can be shown up to 3 times a year; show it right after a user finishes something in the app.

  2. Use the rest of the app name+7 pts

6 characters are free. Add the next most important search term.

  3. Ship an update+2 pts

The last update was 55 days ago. A new version also refreshes the "What's New" notes people read before they download.

  4. Check caption terms against your subtitle and keywords

4 caption terms aren't in the app name: templates, edits, ai photo editor, selfie. Captions don't count for search; the subtitle and the 100-character keyword field do.

Apply it to your app

A checklist for your next product page update.

  • Show the finished result in screenshot 1, not the menu that makes it.
  • Put the input and the output in the same frame so the change is clear.
  • Name your category in a caption when the app name does not do it.
  • Use a light line and a bold line so the key phrase stands out.
  • Keep the dark or light background the same on every image and match the icon.
  • Add a rating, award or user count if you have a real one. This set shows none.
How it works

How the ASO score works

  1. 01

    App name, 25 points

Up to 10 for how much of Apple's 30 characters it uses, 10 for a brand + keyword structure, 5 when keywords fill half the name or more.

  2. 02

    Screenshots, 35 points

Captions on every image, captions that name searched features, a first screenshot that shows the main use, one design system, readability at search size, and a trust signal.

  3. 03

    Ratings, 25 points

Up to 15 for the average (from 4.0, full marks at 4.8) and 10 for the count (from 1,000, full marks at 100,000 ratings).

  4. 04

    Freshness, 15 points

Full marks for an update in the last 30 days, falling to zero at 180 days. 85+ is excellent, 70+ strong, 50+ fair.

FAQ

Common questions

What is an ASO score?

A 100-point check of the parts of an App Store page you control: the app name, screenshots, ratings and how recently the app was updated. It's our own scoring rule, shown in full on this page, not a number from Apple. Use it to compare your page with apps that already sell well in your category.

How long can an app name be on the App Store?

30 characters. A common pattern is a short brand followed by the main thing people search for, like “AI Photo Generator: ARTA”, which uses 24. Apple also gives you a 30-character subtitle and a 100-character keyword field for more terms.

Which screenshots show up in App Store search results?

The first one to three, when the app has no preview video. That's why the first three should cover the main reasons people download. AI Photo Generator uses them for templates, edits and ai photo editor.

How many screenshots can an iPhone app have?

Up to 10 per device size. Apple recommends focusing each screenshot after the first on one main benefit or feature. AI Photo Generator uses 4.

Where do the download and revenue numbers come from?

They're third-party estimates for the US App Store, not figures reported by the developer. Treat them as a sense of scale. Growth compares the latest month with the month before.

Do screenshot captions help an app rank in search?

Apple says search results use text matches in the app name, subtitle, keywords and primary category, plus user behavior such as downloads, ratings and reviews. Captions aren't on that list: they help people who already see the app decide to download. When a caption names something people search for, put that term in the keyword field too.
