Screenshots and why they convert

9 screenshots of up to 10, the first 6 shown here. The first 3 show in search results when there's no preview video.

  1. Screenshot 4: Optimize Storage Space
  2. Screenshot 5: Remove Spam Emails
  3. Screenshot 6: Keep The Best Photos
  1. #1In search results

AI Cleaner Clean your phone in One -Click

    • ai cleanerin name
    • clean your phonenot in name
    What it shows
The app icon above the name, a one-click line, three feature rows (Optimize Storage, Clean Up Email, Delete Duplicate) and a “Trusted by over 5,000,000 user worldwide” laurel badge.
    Why it converts
Says what the app does and lists its three jobs in one frame. The first frame leans on the icon and name, which a visitor already sees, but the feature rows add the real answer. The user-count badge is the app's own claim.
  2. #2In search results

    Clean Storage

    • clean storagein name
    What it shows
A “Space to clean” card reading 250 GB with a red bar, over photo tiles sorted by type (duplicate photo, image, video, similar photo, screenshot), plus a “100% SECURE” seal.
    Why it converts
The big number shows the problem at a glance, and the tiles show where the space goes. The caption names something people look for. The seal is the app's own badge and is not backed by any source on the image.
  3. #3In search results

    Delete Duplicate Photos

    • duplicate photosnot in name
    What it shows
A Similar Photos list with a “Best Result” photo marked and a “Delete 38 Photos” button.
    Why it converts
One feature, clear outcome: the app picks the photo to keep. The button is large enough to read in a small thumbnail. “Duplicate photos” is a feature people look for.
  4. #4

    Optimize Storage Space

    • storage spacenot in name
    What it shows
A before and after gauge, 90% used to 25% used (230.4GB to 64GB of 256GB), above Similar Photos and Duplicate Photos rows with Clean up buttons.
    Why it converts
The before and after gauge shows the result a visitor wants. The numbers are the app's own example, so the page should be read as a demo, not a guarantee.
  5. #5

    Remove Spam Emails

    • spam emailsnot in name
    What it shows
A blurred inbox with a “Detection 969 Spam email” card and Delete and Keep buttons.
    Why it converts
Shows the email feature named in the first image. The card stays readable while the inbox is blurred.
  6. #6

    Keep The Best Photos

    • best photosnot in name
    What it shows
A photo review screen at 4/60 with a Delete-tagged card and a Like-tagged card, and an Empty Trash button.
    Why it converts
Shows a swipe-style review, a different way to use the app. The Delete and Like tags make the action clear without reading the UI.

Icon and design system

What makes the page read as one brand at a glance.

120px
60px
40px
  • One symbol, three looping arrows, suggests cleaning and recycling without text.
  • Solid blue background is simple, and the same blue is used for captions and buttons in the screenshots.
  • The shape is bold with little fine detail, so it should hold up at small sizes.
  1. 01

    Big blue two-line captions

Most images open with a short bold headline: a verb in the large line and the object below it. The words are easy to read at a glance.

  2. 02

    Oversized card over the phone

A key number or result sits on a white card that overlaps the phone frame, such as 250 GB, 969 spam emails and 90% to 25%. The number stays readable when the image is small.

  3. 03

    Result shown as a number

Several images show a number or before and after instead of a menu. The visitor sees the outcome of cleaning, not the steps.

  4. 04

Trust badges on the first two images

A 5,000,000 user claim and a “100% SECURE” seal are printed on the images. Both are the app's own claims.

  5. 05

    A shared light blue background

A blue gradient and the same type style hold most of the set together and match the icon.

Where the points are

  1. Ask happy users for a rating+11 pts

4.5 stars from 9,052 ratings. Apple's in-app rating prompt can be shown up to 3 times a year; show it right after a user finishes something in the app.

  2. Ship an update+1 pts

The last update was 42 days ago. A new version also refreshes the "What's New" notes people read before they download.

  3. Check caption terms against your subtitle and keywords

5 caption terms aren't in the app name: clean your phone, duplicate photos, storage space, spam emails, best photos. Captions don't count for search; the subtitle and the 100-character keyword field do.

Apply it to your app

A checklist for your next product page update.

  • Show what the app does in the first image, not only its name and icon.
  • Write captions as a short verb plus the thing the user wants to fix.
  • Enlarge the key number or result so it reads at thumbnail size.
  • Show a before and after when your app has a clear result.
  • Put one feature in each screenshot and name it in the caption.
  • If you print a user count or badge, make sure it is true and easy to check.
How it works

How the ASO score works

  1. 01

    App name, 25 points

Up to 10 for how much of Apple's 30 characters it uses, 10 for a brand + keyword structure, 5 when keywords fill half the name or more.

  2. 02

    Screenshots, 35 points

Captions on every image, captions that name searched features, a first screenshot that shows the main use, one design system, readability at search size, and a trust signal.

  3. 03

    Ratings, 25 points

Up to 15 for the average (from 4.0, full marks at 4.8) and 10 for the count (from 1,000, full marks at 100,000 ratings).

  4. 04

    Freshness, 15 points

Full marks for an update in the last 30 days, falling to zero at 180 days. 85+ is excellent, 70+ strong, 50+ fair.

FAQ

Common questions

What is an ASO score?

A 100-point check of the parts of an App Store page you control: the app name, screenshots, ratings and how recently the app was updated. It's our own scoring rule, shown in full on this page, not a number from Apple. Use it to compare your page with apps that already sell well in your category.

How long can an app name be on the App Store?

30 characters. A common pattern is a short brand followed by the main thing people search for, like “AI Cleaner: Clean Up Storage+”, which uses 29. Apple also gives you a 30-character subtitle and a 100-character keyword field for more terms.

Which screenshots show up in App Store search results?

The first one to three, when the app has no preview video. That's why the first three should cover the main reasons people download. AI Cleaner uses them for ai cleaner, clean storage and duplicate photos.

How many screenshots can an iPhone app have?

Up to 10 per device size. Apple recommends focusing each screenshot after the first on one main benefit or feature. AI Cleaner uses 9.

Where do the download and revenue numbers come from?

They're third-party estimates for the US App Store, not figures reported by the developer. Treat them as a sense of scale. Growth compares the latest month with the month before.

Do screenshot captions help an app rank in search?

Apple says search results use text matches in the app name, subtitle, keywords and primary category, plus user behavior such as downloads, ratings and reviews. Captions aren't on that list: they help people who already see the app decide to download. When a caption names something people search for, put that term in the keyword field too.
