AdTech
What is AdTech?
AdTech, short for Advertising Technology, is the collection of software, tools, and platforms that enable the planning, buying, managing, and optimizing of digital advertisements across channels including mobile, web, and connected TV. It encompasses demand-side platforms (DSPs), supply-side platforms (SSPs), ad exchanges, ad networks, data management platforms (DMPs), and mobile measurement partners (MMPs). AdTech exists to make digital advertising more efficient, transparent, and effective for both advertisers and publishers.
How it works
AdTech operates as an interconnected ecosystem where each platform serves a distinct function, and together they automate and optimize the end-to-end process of digital advertising.
Demand-Side Platforms (DSPs)
DSPs allow advertisers to automate the purchase of digital ad inventory across multiple exchanges and networks through a single interface. They optimize bidding in real time based on targeting criteria such as audience segments, device type, geography, and behavioral data.
Supply-Side Platforms (SSPs)
SSPs enable publishers to manage and monetize their ad inventory by connecting it to multiple DSPs, ad exchanges, and ad networks simultaneously. SSPs use real-time bidding (RTB) to maximize the revenue earned for each available ad impression.
Ad Exchanges
Ad exchanges are digital marketplaces where DSPs and SSPs connect to transact on ad inventory. They facilitate real-time auctions in which the highest-qualifying bid wins the impression, enabling programmatic advertising at scale.
Ad Networks
Ad networks aggregate inventory from multiple publishers and package it for advertisers. They simplify the buying process by allowing advertisers to reach audiences across a broad range of apps and websites through a single buy, without negotiating individual publisher deals.
Data Management Platforms (DMPs)
DMPs collect, organize, and activate audience data from first-, second-, and third-party sources. Advertisers use DMPs to build audience segments that inform targeting strategies across DSPs and other AdTech tools.
Mobile Measurement Partners (MMPs)
MMPs such as Airbridge sit at the measurement layer of the AdTech stack. They attribute installs, in-app events, and revenue back to the specific campaigns, channels, and creatives that drove them. By integrating with DSPs, ad networks, and SSPs, an MMP provides a unified, deduplicated view of campaign performance across the entire AdTech ecosystem.
Why it matters
AdTech removes the manual, fragmented processes that once defined media buying and replaces them with automated, data-driven systems that operate at scale. For mobile marketers, AdTech tools reduce the cost and time required to reach relevant audiences, improve targeting precision, and generate the measurable signals needed to optimize spend. Without AdTech infrastructure, advertisers cannot efficiently run programmatic campaigns, publishers cannot maximize fill rates, and measurement partners cannot attribute outcomes to sources. The interoperability of AdTech platforms, connected through standards like OpenRTB and postback integrations, is what makes modern mobile growth strategies operational.
How to measure performance across the AdTech ecosystem
Measuring performance across the AdTech stack requires connecting every layer, from impression to conversion, through a consistent attribution framework.
-
Integrate an MMP: Connect a mobile measurement partner like Airbridge to your DSPs, ad networks, and SSPs. This creates a single source of truth for attribution across all channels and eliminates double-counting from self-reported network data.
-
Implement tracking links: Use MMP-generated tracking links for each campaign and creative. These links capture click and impression data that feeds into attribution models.
-
Configure postbacks: Set up server-to-server postbacks from your MMP to each connected ad network or DSP so that conversion data flows back in real time for campaign optimization.
-
Define attribution windows: Set lookback windows appropriate to each channel. View-through attribution windows for display and video typically differ from click-based windows for search or social.
-
Monitor cross-channel reporting: Use your MMP dashboard to compare performance across DSPs, ad networks, and other channels using consistent metrics such as CPI, CPA, ROAS, and LTV. This reveals which AdTech partners and channels deliver the highest-quality users.
-
Audit for fraud signals: Review click-to-install time (CTIT) distributions, duplicate IP patterns, and anomalous conversion rates. Integrating blocklist data and fraud detection tools within your AdTech setup protects budget from invalid traffic sources.
