What is Real-time bidding (RTB)?

Real-time bidding (RTB) is an automated programmatic advertising method in which digital ad impressions are bought and sold through instantaneous auctions conducted in milliseconds. Advertisers submit bids via a demand-side platform (DSP) each time a user loads a page or app, and the highest bidder's creative is immediately served to that user. RTB enables precise audience targeting and dynamic pricing, making it the dominant transaction model in open programmatic advertising.

How it works

RTB operates through a tightly choreographed sequence of events that completes before a page finishes loading.

1. Impression Signal

When a user visits a website or opens an app, the publisher's ad server detects an available ad slot and sends a bid request to a supply-side platform (SSP). The bid request contains contextual signals including the placement, the publisher's app or domain, and any available audience data such as device type, geography, and behavioral segments.

2. Auction Initiation

The SSP forwards the bid request to connected DSPs and ad exchanges. Each DSP evaluates the impression against the targeting criteria and budget parameters set by its advertisers. DSPs that find a match calculate a bid price based on the perceived value of reaching that specific user at that moment.

3. Bid Submission

Eligible DSPs submit bid responses, each containing a maximum bid price and the ad creative to be served. The entire exchange, from bid request to bid response, is governed by the OpenRTB protocol, which standardizes the data format and communication between buyers and sellers.

4. Auction Resolution

The SSP runs a second-price auction by default: the highest bidder wins the impression but pays the second-highest bid price plus a minimal increment. Some platforms use first-price auctions, where the winner pays their actual bid. The winning ad creative is returned and rendered in the user's browser or app within milliseconds.

5. Impression Delivery and Tracking

The winning advertiser's ad is displayed to the user. An impression tracker fires to confirm delivery, and any subsequent user interactions such as clicks or conversions are recorded for campaign reporting and optimization.

Why it matters

RTB fundamentally changes how advertising inventory is valued and traded. Instead of negotiating fixed rates for broad audience segments, advertisers pay for individual impressions based on real-time signals about the user and context. This shifts budget toward high-value opportunities and reduces waste on irrelevant placements.

For advertisers, RTB provides granular control over who sees their ads and how much is paid for each impression. Campaign managers can adjust bids dynamically based on performance signals, apply audience exclusions, and allocate spend toward the placements that deliver the strongest return on ad spend (ROAS).

For publishers, RTB increases competition for their inventory, which drives yield upward compared to static, pre-negotiated deals. The open auction format means every impression is exposed to a broad pool of potential buyers simultaneously.

This attribution data closes the loop between auction performance and downstream business outcomes, enabling more informed bidding strategies.

How to optimize real-time bidding campaigns

Effective RTB optimization requires continuous alignment between audience signals, bid logic, and measurement data.

Define audience segments precisely. Use first-party data from your app or CRM to build audience lists for targeting or exclusion. Suppressing existing customers from acquisition campaigns avoids paying for impressions that will not convert.

Set bid floors and caps by placement type. Not all inventory delivers equal value. Separate bid strategies for in-app versus mobile web, and for banner versus interstitial formats, prevent overpaying in lower-performing environments.

Align bidding with conversion goals. Configure your DSP to optimize toward the metric that matters, such as cost per install (CPI) or cost per action (CPA), rather than simply minimizing cost per mille (CPM). Many DSPs support algorithmic bidding that adjusts bids automatically based on predicted conversion probability.

Monitor for ad fraud signals. Open RTB auctions are exposed to invalid traffic including impression fraud, click fraud, and bot traffic. Apply blocklists for known fraudulent publishers, filter by suspicious IP patterns, and use click-to-install time (CTIT) analysis to detect anomalies.

Use attribution data to refine bids. Connect MMP attribution reports to your DSP. Identify which exchanges, publishers, and audience segments produce installs that reach target engagement milestones, and shift budget toward those sources. Test deal types strategically. RTB open auctions offer scale, but private marketplace (PMP) deals and programmatic guaranteed buys provide access to premium inventory with less competition. Layering all three deal types across a campaign balances reach, cost, and quality.
