What is Self-attributing network (SAN)?
A self-attributing network (SAN) is an ad network that operates as both a publisher and an advertising platform, enabling it to measure and report conversions internally using its own first-party data. Because SANs control the entire ad delivery and user tracking environment within their own platform, they do not rely on third-party tracking links to attribute conversions. Major SANs include Google, Meta, Apple Search Ads, TikTok, and Snap.
How it works
SANs attribute conversions through proprietary tracking systems built into their own platforms, then share that attribution data with MMPs via API integrations rather than through standard tracking links.
Internal Attribution Mechanism
When a user interacts with an ad on a SAN platform, the network assigns a unique identifier to that interaction using its own first-party signals, such as logged-in user identity, device IDs, and behavioral data. As the user moves through the conversion funnel, the SAN tracks the journey end-to-end within its own ecosystem, attributing the conversion to the relevant campaign without needing an external redirect or click tracker.
Data Sharing with MMPs
SANs do not send raw impression or click data to MMPs the way traditional ad networks do. Instead, they share aggregated or summarized conversion data through a direct API connection. The MMP receives this data as a postback or API response and incorporates it into the overall attribution picture alongside data from other channels. This means MMPs must trust the conversion counts reported by SANs, as they cannot independently verify each individual event.
Comparison to Traditional Ad Networks
In a traditional ad network, an MMP places a tracking link in the ad creative. When a user clicks, the MMP captures the click signal and later matches it to an install or conversion event. SANs bypass this model entirely. The SAN handles both ad delivery and conversion tracking internally, then surfaces only the final attribution outcome to the MMP. This architectural difference is the defining characteristic of a SAN and the source of both its measurement advantages and its limitations.
Why it matters
SANs represent a significant portion of global digital ad spend, making their accurate integration into MMP workflows critical for marketers. Because SANs use first-party data and logged-in user graphs, their attribution signals are generally more durable than cookie-based or device-ID-based methods, particularly in privacy-restricted environments such as iOS post-ATT.
However, the SAN model introduces a structural challenge: marketers cannot independently audit the conversion data provided by a SAN the same way they can verify clicks and installs from a standard ad network. This creates a dependency on the SAN's reporting and makes deduplication across channels more complex. When the same conversion is claimed by both a SAN and another network, MMPs must apply attribution logic to resolve the conflict, typically favoring the last touch or a defined priority order.

How to set up self-attributing network measurement
Setting up accurate SAN measurement requires a different configuration than standard ad network tracking.
1. Identify your SANs. Determine which of your active ad partners are SANs. Common examples include Google Ads, Meta Ads, Apple Search Ads, TikTok for Business, and Snap. These platforms do not use MMP tracking links for attribution.
2. Connect via API integration. In your MMP dashboard, enable the dedicated API integration for each SAN. This connection authorizes the SAN to send conversion data directly to your MMP. Each SAN has its own authentication and permission requirements, so follow the platform-specific setup guide provided by your MMP.
3. Do not use tracking links for SAN campaigns. SANs attribute internally, so adding an MMP tracking link to a SAN campaign is unnecessary and can cause data discrepancies. Use the API-based integration as the sole data pipeline.
4. Define attribution priority rules. Because SANs self-report conversions, configure your MMP's attribution priority settings to handle conflicts between SAN-reported conversions and other network claims. Establish a clear hierarchy so that the MMP resolves overlapping attribution consistently.
5. Monitor for discrepancies. Regularly compare MMP-reported conversions against the native reporting dashboards of each SAN. Some variance is expected due to attribution window differences and counting methodology. Significant or growing discrepancies signal a configuration issue that needs investigation.
6. Use cost aggregation. Pull cost data from SAN APIs into your MMP's cost aggregation module to calculate accurate ROAS and CPI figures alongside conversion data. Without cost data, campaign performance cannot be fully evaluated.
